Review:

Read this in one day, just like the book is a journal of one day in the life of a Russian imprisoned under the Soviet regime in 1951.

A brilliant, terrifying document, but captivating and gripping.

I could relate to so many aspects of the prison experience, conditions for my incarceration were improved by orders of magnitude from this gulag, but the motivations and anxieties remain the same.

  • Will I get caught with this contraband?
  • Will I ever get enough to eat? How can I get more?
  • Wouldn’t it be nice if this guard had an accident?

5 stars overall. Not a bad page in the whole thing.

This book made me want to: stay inside away from the cold
