Review:

Obviously I’m biased, being a Willa Cather devotee. But I believe that objectively this is a really good novel. Also it’s set in and around the Great War so again I’m almost bound to like it.

This is the story of Claude Wheeler, from small town American whose life and the lives of all those around him is forever changed by war. It happened to be the 1914-1918 conflict, but could just as easily been the second war, or Vietnam, or even modern Ukraine or Russia.

Of note is the fact that Cather wrote this in 1922, so with hindsight rather than nationalist sentiment.

This book made me want to: keep reading about the Great War
